NARCOTICS DETECTION:
Some of ACSO’S canines in the patrol division are crossed trained for patrol work and narcotic detection. They are certified through the State of California to alert to the odors of marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin.  Some of the canines passively alert to narcotic odor(s) by sitting and staring at the source of the odor(s), while one alerts by scratching at the source.
ACSO canines are frequently called upon by other officers and agencies to sniff containers, vehicles, and buildings for hidden narcotics. One of the canines recently surpassed $1,000,000 in cumulative cash seizures. The same canine has also been responsible for locating several compartments in vehicles, as well as a false room inside a residence.
The canines have a sense of smell that is far greater than that of a human. One of the aspects of their olfactory system is that they are able to discriminate and identify individual odors. This is a very important because criminals frequently try to mask the odors of the narcotics with other items. ACSO canines have located narcotics which were hidden and/or wrapped in motor oil, axle grease, coffee, powdered laundry soap, fabric softener, perfume, etc.
A canine is normally available to assist with a narcotic search 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
