Part IV - Activities of Alameda County Sheriff's K-9 Association:
Introduction:
This corporation is organized and operated exclusively for one or more of the following purposes: charitable, educational, scientific and/or religious purposes, including, for such purposes, the making of distributions to organizations that qualify as exempt organizations under section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or corresponding section of any future federal tax code.
The specific purpose of the organization is to promote the use of Police Service canines in the community and advance canine education among school and community groups by performing canine demonstrations as well as appearing at special events. Alameda County Sheriff's K-9 Association also strives to provide additional equipment for police service canines and their handlers, assist in the care of retired police canines and furnish their death benefits.
Activities:
The activities of the organization are listed below:
Public Awareness / Equipment
Financial Assistance
Fund Raising Activities.
Administrative Activities.
Public Relations.
1. Education / Public Awareness:
The purpose of the activity is to conduct demonstrations and other events to educate kids and the public about what our dogs can do as well as to benefit Sheriff's K-9s with protective vests and other equipment. Through its fundraising efforts, the organization is going to help pay for retired dogs, which will live at the handlers’ homes and to give our service K-9s proper funerals.
We are educating the public through demos to give understanding of what the dogs do every day. It is important for the handlers to show the public how much they love their dogs. For this, we will be conducting demos at schools, community organizations and groups like the boy scouts, cub scouts, as well as at dog shows and events.
We conduct our demos to show the public how well trained our dogs are. Artificial crime scenarios are created in order to show the dogs’ obedience (how our dogs heel and react to hand signals). The K-9’s demonstrate their ability to find articles that people drop and other training objects, like narcotics and guns. We also display how our dogs track people and how the dogs search areas utilizing their sense of smell.
The schedule of our demos already held in the year 2008 and early in 2009 is as follows:
Little Learners Pre-School (Tracy, CA) - May 3rd, 2008;
Girl Scouts (Livermore, CA) - December 15th, 2008;
Dublin Police Citizens Academy - June 7th, 2008;
Dublin Police Youth Academy – June 10th, 2008;
Alameda County Sheriff’s Citizen Academy – January, 2009;
Alameda County Deputy Sheriff’s Association BBQ – September, 2007 and 2008;
Boy Scout Troop (Pleasanton, CA) - March 3rd, 2009.
The number of participants depends on school or group size. School demos are usually attended by over a hundred participants. As for citizens’ groups, they are usually about fifty persons.
Public demos are held to show off our dogs and hopefully get donations to obtain bullet proof vests and other protective equipment for the dogs. We are planning also to raise funds through sales of shirts, mugs and other products with the association’s logo.
The organization is and will be conducting its fundraising activities and public demos at various locations in Alameda County with no rental charges involved. Most citizens’ academies are held at:
Dublin Police Services
100 Civic Plaza Drive
Dublin, CA 94568
, 2009, with deputies in charge and is promoted to the public through demos and word of mouth (our website is under construction- HYPERLINK "http://www.acsok9.com" www.acsok9.com). The project is funded through donations from public. No fees are charged from the attendees.
The K-9 handlers receive thousands of hours of training to handle their dogs. All of us are California Police Officers Standards and Training Certified. All members are Deputy Sheriffs and have completed numerous schools to become police officers.
2. Financial Assistance:
When one of our police dogs retires, the handler usually “adopts” the dog. The handlers and their K-9 partners will have worked side-by-side every day, usually for five to seven years, forming a very strong bond. Due to this bond, the handler makes sure that his/her retired partner has a chance to “just be a dog” and live out his hard-earned “golden years” as comfortably as possible. The handler is responsible for the healthcare, food and maintenance costs for the rest of the dog’s life. Since these are dedicated working dogs, many times they sustain injuries in the course of their careers protecting the public, other officers and their human partners. As the dogs age, much like with humans, the medical expenses of the retired dogs can be expensive.
Alameda County Sheriff's K-9 Association recognizes that maintaining a Police K-9 Unit is an expensive endeavor and unfortunately, due to restrictive budgets, the cities involved are not financially able to pay many of these costs. It is our goal to honor the life-long service of these dogs by raising funds to purchase additional equipment, support them in retirement as well as at the time of their death.
The organization is going to financially assist Alameda County Sheriff’s K-9s handlers who are caring for retired police service dogs. Though currently we do not have any retired dogs, several dogs are scheduled to retire next year.
Our goal is to offer each retired K-9 up to $1,000 a year in medical benefits from the association. We will pay the bills directly to the veterinary to ensure the funds are used for charitable purposes only.
3. Fund Raising Activities:
The organization is dependent on the voluntary donations and contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations. If required, in order to generate adequate funds for the activities of the organization, the organization may solicit funds from individuals and organizations.
Alameda County Sheriff's K-9 Association will not participate in any fund-raising program where there is direct benefit to the individual who raises the funds. We will adopt no system where individuals receive aid based on the amounts raised specifically for them.
4. Administrative Activities:
Alameda County Sheriff's K-9 Association will also spend a part of its time and resources on administrative related activities. Such activities will help ensure that the organization works efficiently and is effective in fulfilling its objectives and vision.
5. Public Relations:
A part of the organization’s time and effort will be spent on public relations. The organization’s objectives in engaging in public relations are to widen its support base and to promote the organization among potential volunteers and general public.
Allocation of Resources:
Alameda County Sheriff's K-9 Association will distribute its time and resources for the various activity groups elaborated above, in the following manner:
|
Public Awareness / Equipment / Financial Assistance |

Fund Raising Activities |

Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue code provides tax exemption for groups organized and operated exclusively for charitable purposes, no part of the net earnings of which inures to the benefit of any private shareholder or individual.
By promoting the use of Police Service canines in the community, providing additional canine education and assisting in the care of retired police canines, the organization is clearly engaged in furthering charitable purposes for the benefit of the community.
